The spine is comprised of the bones of the back, called the vertebrae. In between the vertebrae are the intervertebral discs, which act as shock absorbers. The joints of the back are called the facet joints. The spine a complicated structure, with many parts, working in synergy during our activities of daily living. Improper techniques during activities of daily living, vibratory forces, repetitive activities, genetics and lifestyle activities, such as smoking, can contribute to degenerative changes of our spine. Knowledge and prevention is an important component in managing low back symptoms. Proper mechanics during lifting include - plan ahead, get close to the object you want to lift, bend at your knees and hips, tighten with your stomach muscles and lifting with your leg muscles as you stand up.
