Hip
The hip is a ball and socket joint, where the femoral head (top of the femur or thigh bone) meets the pelvis. The hip joint allows for both stability and range of motion, and weight bearing during ambulation.

In addition to the bony surfaces of the joint, the hip is comprised of the muscles that enable movement, the tendons that connect those muscles to the bone, the bursae, and the joint capsule or labrum.  Any of these structures can become symptomatic due to overuse or repetitive activities or injury, and inflammatory and arthritic changes.

Pain and injury from the hip is commonly felt in the groin, the outer or back of the thigh, the buttock, or may radiate to the knee and lower leg.

The hip and lumbar spine can give symptoms in the same areas, therefore a comprehensive history, evaluation and assessment is necessary to determine the cause.

Diagnosis is your doctor's responsibility.  Assessment and correct treatment is your physical therapist's responsibility.
