Back Pain is the most frequent cause of limited activity in a person younger than 45 years of age in the United States. The magnitude of the problem is enormous. 80% of the population is estimated to experience back pain at some time. Adults of all ages are affected, most frequently between the ages of 30 and 55 years. It has been estimated that low back problems and related pain cost Americans 40 billion dollars per year. Back pain constitutes more than a medical problem since it bears social, industrial and economic implications. In response to the growing medical economic consequences of low back dysfunction, The Back School was formed. The group is comprised of licensed health care professionals who are interested in, and dedicated to, preventing and alleviating spinal dysfunction. The Back School is a conservative therapeutic program to aid in the relief and prevention of low back pain. It is a simple and safe course which offers practical and effective ways to minimize back pain and help prevent future back problems. Through education and awareness, individuals learn to accept responsibility for their own health and to participate actively in its management. The Back School consists of one 60 minute session. Sessions are limited to 3-5 people with 3 being the average size given by New York State licensed physical therapists. Back School Educational Course Content:
